Parkinson’s Disease Symptoms
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive brain disorder, which means that it develops slowly over years. Early detection is often hindered, as initial symptoms may go unnoticed or be attributed to other issues.
Symptoms vary and progress differently patient to patient; however, common symptoms typically include:
Tremors. Tremors usually occur when at rest, often starting in one limb and extending through both sides of the body. Tremors may also occur in the jaw, mouth or tongue, and some patients feel internal tremors.
Dyskinesia. Dyskinesia is an uncontrolled, involuntary movement that may look like fidgeting or swaying. It typically occurs as a side effect of long-term levodopa use, which is a medication that controls other Parkinson’s disease symptoms.
Rigidity. Some patients feel a tightness or stiffness in their limbs or torso.
Bradykinesia. This refers to slowness of movement and may include a decreased blink rate and difficulty with fine motor coordination.
Speech changes. Speech may become softer or more monotone.
The combination of motor and non-motor symptoms, along with the progressive nature of Parkinson’s disease, can be especially challenging for patients and their loved ones. Although the exact cause of Parkinson’s disease is unknown, we do know that Parkinson’s is associated with significant changes to the brain.
